San Diego County, created February 18, 1850, currently has a population of 3,120,008 and is the southwestern most county in the contiguous 48 states

San Diego is bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean and the south by Mexico. San Diego is a part of the San Diego – Tijuana metropolitan area which is occupied by over 5 million people and is the largest bi-national metro area shared between the US and Mexico.

The area in which San Diego is now located was occupied by Kumeyaay Indians, also known as the Dieguenos, for more than 10,000 years. In 1848 the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the US-Mexico war and San Diego then became a part of the United States.

San Diego County shares an International border with Mexico and the border town of Tijuana. Orange County and Riverside County are located to the north, and Imperial County is located along the eastern border. Los Angeles and San Bernardino, although not bordering San Diego, are less than 100 miles away. 

The County of San Diego has 18 federally-recognized Indian Reservations which occupy over 200 Sq. Miles of the county.  The 18 reservations (also known as “Rancherias”) make San Diego home to more reservations than any other county in the United States.
